Southeastern’s utmost priority is the success of students.

Student success in this case is defined as 1) successful completion of courses by students through accomplishment of course learning objectives, 2) timely progression through courses included in the student’s degree program, and 3) timely completion of the degree program demonstrated through graduation.

Research clearly suggests that students who miss class are not as successful as those who become fully engaged from the very beginning of the semester. Students who enter a course one or more days after it begins drop or fail at a much higher rate.

Allowing late registration after the beginning of the semester encourages students to not finalize their course schedules until the semester is already under way. In addition, class rosters fluctuate so much during late registration that many faculty do not begin covering substantive course material until late registration ends. Students, assuming that faculty will not cover material during late registration, tend to not attend class until after late registration.

Because class rosters fluctuate so much during late registration, departments often cannot make final decisions about adding or canceling sections, making it much more difficult to offer sufficient sections to meet demand and not offer unnecessary sections where demand is not as great.

To address these issues, the University will implement a slightly revised course registration schedule beginning this summer. This means that students will be expected to make, and will be assisted in making, well-informed course selection decisions earlier in the registration cycle.

Department heads, faculty members and advisors from the Center for Student Excellence will work to assist students in developing an academic plan that will map out the sequence of courses over their academic career. This will allow students to be better prepared to make timely and informed course selection decisions.

Accordingly, the 2007-2008 academic calendar lists Tuesday, June 5, as the last day to register for classes or adjust class schedules for the summer 2007 semester. Once classes begin on Wednesday, June 6, any schedule changes must be approved by the students’ academic deans and must be due to documented extenuating circumstances.

Likewise for fall 2007, the last day to add or drop classes will be Thursday, August 16, before classes begin on Monday August 20.

Between now and the deadlines stated above, students will have numerous opportunities to register for classes for either semester. And as always, during these registration opportunities, students can register 24 hours a day from any computer, anywhere in the world as long as they have access to the internet.

Students who still have advising holds for either semester are encouraged to get advised before the spring semester ends since departmental advisors may be more accessible while the spring semester is still in session.
