Powell named program director for Louisiana Campus Compact

     HAMMOND Karen Powell has been appointed program director of Louisiana Campus Compact, a coalition of 31 Louisiana public and private colleges and universities focused on fulfilling the civic mission of higher education.

     Housed at Southeastern, Campus Compact unites concepts such as service-learning, leadership, volunteerism and activism with educational goals of developing college and university graduates who are prepared for a career and for life as informed and involved citizens at local, national, and international levels.

     Powell, who will assist Executive Director Stuart Stewart, comes to Louisiana Campus Compact after serving as assistant director of the Communication Across the Curriculum (CxC) program at Louisiana State University. At CxC Powell helped establish and develop initiatives such as communication-intensive course certification, Communication Studios, and the Distinguished Communicator student certification.

     “This position offers me exciting new opportunities to further the prosperty of my beautiful and unique home state,” Powell said. “I am eager share my ideas and experiences with colleagues across the region, state, and nation and to learn from the work and models of those colleagues. My work at Louisiana Campus Compact will enable me to align even more directly my personal interests and values with my profession.”

     Powell also served as a faculty member in LSU’s English Department and Honors College, where she taught interdisciplinary courses on ancient western civilization and medieval culture and courses on composition, business communication, drama, Shakespeare and poetry. She has also taught in the English at the University of Delaware and instructed English as a second language students in the university’s English Language Institute.

     Powell has a master’s degree in English from the University of Delaware and bachelor’s degrees in English and Philosophy from LSU. A Louisiana native, she is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer.
