HAMMONDSoutheastern Louisiana University’s College of Science and Technology recognized students for outstanding academic performance at the college’s April 24 honors convocation.

Marc Richardson of Hammond received the Outstanding Senior Award in Biological Sciences, while the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award in Chemistry went to Tao Lin of Slidell. Cited as “Distinguished Graduates”  were Joel Pena of Marrero, computer science; Karl Sharp of Franklinton, industrial technology, bachelor’s degree program; Lawrence Lugwigsen of Covington, industrial technology, associate degree program; Joshua Mann of Central, occupational safety, health and environment program; and Jared Eusea of Paradis and Brooke Lockhart of Hammond, mathematics.

At the ceremony the college also recognized as its outstanding alumnus, Robert W. Malley, a native of Bogalusa whose long career in the space industry included involvement with both the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft programs. For Apollo flights, including the historic Apollo 13 mission, Malley led the mission evaluation team. Known as the “Boys in the Backroom,” the team’s engineers and support personnel were responsible for solving problems or anomalies occurring during flights.

Malley graduated from Southeastern in 1948 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and minor in physics. While at Southeastern, he was a member of the marching band, cheerleading squad and Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity.

The college also presented its annual award for excellence in research to physicist Sanichiro Yoshida, whose research recently led to the university’s first patent for a deformation prediction instrument that uses the technology of optical interferometry to make precise measurements that identify weak spots in a wide range of materials, including metals, plastics and other products. Yoshida also serves as a scientist at Livingston’s Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory.
