St. Paul's student wins Region 8 Science Fair

     HAMMOND – Ryan Harlan of St. Paul’s School in Covington was the overall winner of the 2010 Region 8 Science Fair at Southeastern Louisiana University March 18 and 19. His winning project, “Do Microwaves kill bacteria?” received first place honors in the senior division microbiology category. 
     Kelsey White of Fontainebleau Jr. High was the overall winner of the junior division. Her project, “a-MAZ-ing Race,” placed first in the animal science category.
Along with first, second and third place regional winners, Harlan and White will advance to the state science fair at Louisiana State University.
     For the second consecutive year, the Region 8 Science Fair was sponsored by Valero St. Charles Refinery. The company sponsors the fair as a way of supporting educational activities for children. The company also sponsors the Louisiana Science Olympiad, which will be held at Southeastern on April 17.
     Also at the fair, the Navy Science Achievement Awards were presented to Jack Murphy and Thomas Read of the St. Paul’s School. Junior Division Navy Science awards went to Michael Smith of Boyet Junior High, and Everett Thomas and Sarah Tydings of Mandeville Junior High.
     The Iota Sigma Pi Women in Chemistry Award for the best project by female students in the chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science divisions was awarded to Cara Jourdan of Fontainebleau Junior High.
