     HAMMOND – John Villarubbia of St. Paul’s School in Covington took first place in the Division III individual category while Jack Murphy and Evan Heitzman of Mandeville Junior High School claimed the top award in the division’s group category in the 2011 Region 8 Social Studies Fair held at Southeastern Louisiana University March 16. 
     Villarubbia’s winning sociology project was “Distracted or Connected: Wired 2 It.” Murphy and Heitzman’s group project focused on Igor Stravinsky in the history discipline.
All grand prize winners will advance to the state Social Studies Fair to be held at Louisiana State University later this spring.
     Grand prize individual winner in Division II (grades 7-8) was Michael Seenappa of Mandeville Junior High for his sociology project “Does Big Brother See Too Much;” in the division’s group category Jamie Downie and Walt Kelly of Cedarwood School in Mandeville claimed the top prize for their sociology project “Combating Modern Piracy.”
     In Division I (grades 4-6), Sarah Kate Casey of Cedarwood claimed the grand prize for her anthropology project “Ils Sont Partis!” Celeste Mire and Laural Mire of Our Lady of the Lake School in Mandeville got the division’s group grand prize for their project “Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans Culture.”
