HAMMOND – U.S. military veterans at Southeastern Louisiana University are organizing a new student-oriented organization intended to assist veterans entering or returning to college life and to advocate for issues and concerns on behalf of veterans.
Currently in its formative stage, representatives of the group – tentatively called the Southeastern Student Veterans Association – will be staffing a table in the university’s War Memorial Student Union on Tuesday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Volunteers with the group will be on hand to provide additional information and to sign up initial members with the intent of forming an official student organization affiliated with the university.
“To be an official university student organization, we need to get commitments from a number of individuals willing to activate the organization,” said Mark Lawrence, one of the organizers of the group.
He envisions the organization also including veterans’ family members and others as associate members to work with the group.
Students wishing to sign up for the organization but unable to be at the mall station can contact Lawrence at Mark.Lawrence-2@selu.edu or Rene Abadie, Southeastern director of public information who is serving as faculty adviser for the group, at rabadie@selu.edu.
