Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Family Library Opens
By: Sheri Gibson
On October 29, 2025, the Southeastern community celebrated the grand opening of the CSD Family Library in Campbell Hall, a new resource created specifically for the families served through the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. The inviting space features books for readers of all ages, parent resources, comfortable seating for families waiting during speech-language therapy sessions, and materials designed to help older clients practice functional workplace skills. This long-awaited addition reflects the program’s ongoing commitment to supporting not only our clients but also their loved ones and our student clinicians in a warm, family-centered environment.
The event drew an enthusiastic crowd, with dozens of children and their families filling the room alongside faculty, staff, and student clinicians. University President Dr. William Wainwright and First Lady Misty Wainwright graciously joined the celebration, underscoring the university’s pride in this innovative project. Mrs. Wainwright delighted the young visitors by reading the imaginative picture book If I Built a School by Chris Van Dusen, captivating her audience with her warmth and storytelling. Adding to the excitement, Roomie made a special appearance, posing for photos, giving high-fives, and bringing smiles to children throughout the afternoon.
“This library already feels like home.”
The exceptional turnout and joyful atmosphere affirmed the need for this unique family space within the Communication Sciences and Disorders program and clinic. As one parent shared, “This library already feels like home.” The CSD Family Library is now open and ready to serve as a welcoming hub for learning, growing, and connecting for years to come.
The CSD Family Library came to life through the generosity of donations. Specifically, National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) members, under the leadership of faculty advisor Melissa Caserta, donated all the books. The library will continue to thrive through ongoing support from future donors who share in the mission of providing books for readers of all ages and resources for parents of children served by CSD faculty and students.
