Department of Sociology and Criminal JusticeJoshua Lew McDermott is an assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice. His work explores the dynamics of class, work, inequality, culture, and informality in Global South. He conducts field work in Africa and Latin America. He was a Fulbright Scholar in Sierra Leone for the 2024-2025 school year. He is the winner of the 2025 ASA PEWS Distinguished Article Award. Dr. McDermott holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh and an M.A. in political science from New Mexico State University. He is originally from Southeast Idaho.
