CoVid-19 Update

March 3, 2020

Southeastern’s Emergency Preparedness Team has been monitoring development of the COVID-19 virus and coordinating with local healthcare agencies and government officials to ensure that appropriate precautionary measures are being taken.

At present there are no verified cases of the coronavirus in Louisiana. Nevertheless, faculty, staff and students should take appropriate measures to minimize the likelihood of infection by this and other viruses, such as the seasonal flu. Precautionary measures include the following:

Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects using household cleaner or spray.

Individuals who show signs of contagious infection, including with the seasonal flu, should stay home and seek medical treatment if conditions warrant (including development of symptoms such as fever and difficulty breathing).

Finally, individuals should refrain from travel to and from countries with significant COVID-19 outbreaks. The university reserves the right to deny permission and funding for any travel deemed potentially dangerous to the individual or the campus community. Decisions regarding Study Abroad will be made on an individual program basis.

For more information on COVID-19, visit CDC's webpage.

Circumstances associated with the virus outbreak will continue to be monitored, and the campus community will be updated as appropriate.
