Student Organizations

Student Organizations are an integral part of campus life and one of the best opportunities for students to learn outside of the classroom.

Students in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice are provided with opportunities to gain experiences and knowledge from the classroom with the everyday experience of living and working in a society with people of varied cultures, interests, ideas and values.

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD): The International Sociology Honor Society

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) seeks to promote excellence in scholarship in the study of social problems, sociology, and intellectual activities that lead to the improvement of the human condition. AKD members engage in sociological development and application to prepare them for graduate school or future careers while also providing service to the campus and surrounding community.

Alpha Phi Sigma (APS): The Criminal Justice Honors Society

Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) offers Criminal Justice majors the opportunity to take their learning about and contribution to the American criminal justice system beyond the classroom. APS chapters engage in such activities as volunteering with food pantries, visiting drug rehabilitation centers, and hosting criminal justice speakers. APS is affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and with the Association of College Honor Societies.

Pre-Law Student Association (PLSA)

The Pre-Law Student Association (PLSA) allows future law students to network and prepare for law school. Students engage in fun activities such as mock trials and “murder mystery” nights, as well as LSAT prep and writing clinics. Current law professionals also regularly attend meetings to encourage and assist members with their future careers. This organization is open to all majors.

Social Issues Forum

SLU’s sociology club offers its members the opportunity to discuss, explain, and share their opinions on current events, controversial topics, and social issues, as well as their individual experiences, in a ‘safe’ environment of mutual trust and civility. The organization provides service to the campus community through tabling events, food drives, and various types of service projects both independently and in conjunction with the sociology department.
