Alternate certification programs are offered 100% online and are available to anyone who already holds at least a bachelor’s degree but does not hold teacher certification. Admission to an alternate certification program qualifies an individual to hold a practitioner’s license in Louisiana, which qualifies him/her to be employed as a full-time teacher of record while enrolled in the alternate certification program.
Southeastern offers two alternate certification routes: the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree and a non-degree, certification-only option. Certification-only courses are embedded in the MAT degree, allowing students to choose the MAT option after enrolling.
In addition to Louisiana teacher certification, Southeastern is one of only seven U.S. universities to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) certification program. IB certification courses for the Primary Years Programme and the Diploma Programme may be taken concurrently with Louisiana teacher certification courses.
