Dr. Carruth's preparation for a career in nursing began at Southeastern Louisiana University, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She began her teaching career after completing an MSN degree at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Like many nurse faculty, she taught full time and pursued a graduate degree. She received her DNS from LSU Health Sciences Center in 1993.
Dr. Ann Carruth has been a nurse educator over 40 years emphasizing evidence-based curriculum/course development, accreditation, faculty mentoring, and student success and retention. She has served as dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences for the last 14 years. In her role, she has been a staunch advocate for academic excellence and innovation. She has led the implementation of a nursing doctoral program, four new Master’s programs, one undergraduate program and 4 certificate programs. All to increase the pipeline of competent, caring professionals from health and human sciences.
Dr. Carruth serves as an accreditation reviewer for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and a legislative grassroots liaison for AACN. She serves on the Advisory Board at the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health. She is most proud of her role as a commissioner on the board at North Oaks Health System.
During her period of leadership as dean, the School of Nursing has received - on two separate occasions - the Nursing Program of the Year Award and on 3 separate occasions The Graduate Program of the Year Award by the LA State Nurses Foundation.
She has been the recipient of numerous state and federal research and programmatic grant awards, totaling more than 6.8 million. Her funded research and project activity has resulted in numerous awards including the Southeastern President’s Award for Excellence in Research; Rho Zeta chapter of STTI Outstanding Researcher of the Year; the Louisiana. Nurse Foundation’s Nurse Researcher of the Year Award, and the prestigious lifetime achievement award, induction in the LNF’s Hall of Fame.
Dr. Carruth has been married to Paul Carruth for 40 years and together they enjoy traveling with their miniature red poodle, Scout.
