Department of Biological SciencesBeachy specializes in salamander biology with an emphasis on amphibian metamorphosis and how it affects life history biology. He teaches lots of courses including General Biology, Ecology, Population Genetics, and Herpetology. In his research, he works on two related areas: (1) life history biology and (2) metamorphosis. 80% of animal species have a life history that includes a metamorphosis. He uses field surveys and lab experiments with amphibians that enable an understanding of the relationship between metamorphosis and life history evolution.
Before coming to Southeastern in 2013, Beachy spent 20 years teaching in North Dakota and Iowa. He has numerous teaching awards and served as Editor and President of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH). He recently was recognized with the Robert K. Johnson Award for his service to the ASIH.
