Daniel McCarthy received his BS. in Physics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio in 1986. While at CWRU, he was the captain of the varsity swim team, specializing in distance events. He received his Ph.D in Physics from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1992, his research area being theoretical and computational plasma physics, with a focus on fusion energy. While at Southeastern, Dr. McCarthy continued his fusion energy research and collaborated with scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of California San Diego (UCSD), and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA) in Oxford, UK. All of this research was funded by the US Department of Energy, an agency that funded his research for 10 years. Close to 20 Southeastern students worked with him on these funded research projects, many of which ended up with careers in research and academia. In 2005, Dr. McCarthy became the Dean of the newly formed College of Science and Technology at Southeastern. He has held that position since, and during his stewardship, has created 4 new degree programs, grown the enrollment to over 2000 majors, secured funding for new Capital Outlay projects, and significantly increased the amount of donations to the College.
