Department of Sociology and Criminal JusticeDr. Burley is an environmental sociologist. He uses the Socratic method of teaching where critical thinking is essential for students to gain the skills to work in the environmental field. His primary courses are Environmental Sociology (SOC 3600), Social Problems (SOC 2120), Urban Sociology (SOC 4550), and Food, Sustainability and Society (SOC 4600) along with an annual travel study program to Yosemite National Park.
Dr. Burley has also been the advisor of Reconnect, the student environmental sustainability organization, since its inception in 2008. Reconnect has hosted the popular campus farmers market educating the campus community about the economic, social and environmental importance of an ecologically sustainable food system.
Dr. Burley has published widely in the social sciences from his 2010 book, Losing Ground: Identity and Land Loss in Coastal Louisiana, to peer reviewed articles about our food system, student food activism, environmental identity, to essays on cancer, capitalism and pollution.
