Shaffer is currently a Professor at Southeastern Louisiana University in the Department of Biological Sciences. Dr. Shaffer is a founding partner of Wetland Resources, LLC, an environmental consulting firm that designs and monitors wetland restoration projects, specializing on baldcypress – water tupelo systems.
Dr. Shaffer is the Department’s biostatistician, has been studying ecosystem function from algal mudflat systems on the Pacific and Gulf coasts, to herbaceous wetlands of the Atchafalaya and Pontchartrain systems, and for the past three decades has concentrated on developing strategies to bring healthy, hurricane-resistant, baldcypress – water tupelo swamps back to any habitats suitable for their sustainability. Dr. Shaffer has received over $7 million in grants and contracts and has over 100 refereed articles and book chapters in the scientific literature.
