Other than his Department Head duties, Dr. Burns teaches many of the skills classes including Audio Production, Web Design, Podcasting and Persuasion. He came to Higher Education after 12 years as a radio programmer and morning host. His publishing record is mainly Web programming languages and music history. In his spare time, he does woodworking and plays music. Dr. Burns deals mainly with hands-on courses that teach a set of skills meant to create content for broadcasting and production. Outside of this area, his teaching includes Law and Ethics, Broadcast Management and Communication Theory.
The History of Rock and Roll and HTML Programming. Both areas have resulted in multiple books, book chapters and a successful podcast titled Rock School. The podcast, Rock School, had won 10 International Communicator Awards, twice winning the top prize in three categories. The Rock School show was also made a featured and permanent part of the Archive of American Public Broadcasting, housed on the Library of Congress website. His production of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast as a live stage show was also granted Communicator recognition. At Southeastern, he has been given the Friendship Oak, the DSA Service Award and a President's Award for Service.
