Department of History and Political ScienceDr. Sam Cavell is the Associate Professor of Military History specializing in British and U.S. Naval History during the American and French Revolutions, the Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812. She earned a PhD in Naval and Maritime History from the University of Exeter in the UK and her research addresses naval strategy and operations in the context of wider political, social, and economic factors during these conflicts. Dr. Cavell teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in American and Global Military History from the 18th Century to the present. Her book publications include: Midshipmen and Quarterdeck Boys in the British Navy, with chapter contributions to The Battle of New Orleans Reconsidered, From Across the Sea: North Americans in Nelson’s Navy, the upcoming edited volume, Resourcing Great State Wars, and numerous journal articles. She also teaches a course on Strategy & War in the College of Distance Education for the U.S. Naval War College.
Social and Operational History of the British Royal Navy, with a focus on interactions with foreign powers in Europe, North America, and the Atlantic World. The problematic role of the Royal Navy in the Age of Abolition is the focus of her current research.
