Department of Music and Performing ArtsDr. Tyler Whitehead is the current Instructor of Percussion and Assistant Athletic Band Director for the Department of Music and Performing Arts. He received his D.M.A. in Percussion Performance with a minor in Wind Conducting at Louisiana State University. Dr. Whitehead specializes in percussion pedagogy and performance in the classical, commercial, and marching arts style. His approach emphasizes the importance of curating a well-rounded musician in teaching and performance practice. Dr. Whitehead currently teaches the SLU Percussion Studio, Spirit of the Southland Drumline, Spirit of the Southland Basketball Band, as well as other courses within the department such as Music Appreciation and History of Rock and Roll. Whitehead has had success for over a decade in performing, teaching, and multimedia projects, with performances with professional orchestras in Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and Louisiana, as well as other solo performances. His teaching experience spans across all ages and skills being heavily involved in K-12 and college level education in all areas of percussion, presenting clinics and masterclasses. Whitehead is an advocate for providing accessible resources to students such as his full recordings of standard percussion etudes, solos, chamber works.
