English Education Grades 6-12

Students in Southeastern's English Education program receive a balanced education in both English and education. The program features English courses in world, British and American literature, grammar and linguistics. Students also receive training in general methods for teaching as well as discipline-specific methods for teaching English content. Students have an opportunity to practice and apply these methods during field experiences in local schools. Students who complete the degree program will be certified to teach English/Language Arts in secondary schools (grades 6 through 12).

Program Requirements

  • Total semester hours required: 120
  • Semester hours required in English: 51
  • At least 2.5 cumulative GPA and 2.75 major GPA
  • PRAXIS I exams- Reading, Writing, and Math. The composition ACT score of 22 and higher waves PRAXIS I requirement.
  • Students are required to pass Louisiana State Licensure Tests: PRAXIS II exam- English Language Arts: Content Analysis (5039) and Principles of Learning & Teaching exam (5624) prior to student teaching.
  • Students are required to complete student teaching in a year-long residency in secondary school placements.
