Dr. John L. Crain has served as the 14th President of Southeastern Louisiana University since his appointment to the position on February 17, 2009 by the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System.

It is my pleasure to share more good news regarding our Fall 2020 enrollment. Thanks to the concerted efforts of every department, every faculty member, and every staff member, our freshman to sophomore retention rate has hit a record high of 72%! That is quite an accomplishment!

I am proud to share that today we reported a solid increase in enrollment across both undergraduate and graduate students. We reached our highest number of students in three years. With an overall enrollment of 14,461, an increase of 1.4 percent, we experienced growth in several categories. Undergraduate enrollment rose by 1.5 percent, while graduate enrollment experienced an increase of .7 percent. Enrollment of students from Southeastern’s top three feeder parishes of St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Livingston increased by 2.3 percent.

Thanks to our faculty, staff and students working together in this very unusual environment, our fall semester, as unique as it is, has gotten off to a strong start and is progressing relatively well. We continue to offer robust educational opportunities and support services to our students while the number of confirmed positive COVID-19 cases remains very modest.

The 2019 Session of the Louisiana Legislature adjourned on June 6, 2019, and I want to express appreciation for the leadership of Governor John Bel Edwards and for his work and that of many of our legislators in support of funding for higher education.

Apparently, the Louisiana Legislature had been counting on the often-heard idiom, "Third time's the charm." In this year's third special session which ended Sunday, the Legislature finally agreed to a solution that allows the state to avert the July 1 fiscal cliff that was rapidly approaching.
