As a student veteran, you have many VA education benefit options. We’re here to help you understand the ins and outs of how to get the most out of your benefits. SLU’s Financial Aid Office staff will certify your enrollment and help you every step of the way.

 

New Student Veterans

Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

How to Apply

  • Go to the VA website and complete Form 22-1990. The VA wants all veterans to complete the form online.

  • Your Certificate of Eligibility will arrive by mail.

  • Students must provide SLU Financial aid office with a copy of the Certificate of Eligibility once received from the VA.

Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB Chapters 30 and 1606)

How to Apply

  • Go to the VA website and complete Form 22-1990. The VA wants all veterans to complete the form online.

  • Your Certificate of Eligibility will arrive by mail.

VA Vocational Rehabilitation (Chapter 31)

How to Apply

  • Fill out Form 28-1900 at www.va.gov.

  • The VA will then set up an appointment with your local VA vocational rehabilitation counselor.

All New Students

How to Apply

  • Military Transcripts: The VA requires all veterans to request their JST or CCAF military transcripts.

  • Discharge Notification: We also request a copy of your DD214.

  • SLU Form: We ask all veterans to complete the university Veteran's Certification Request.

 

 

Established Student Veterans

  • SLU Form: We ask all veterans to complete the university Veteran's Certification Request.

  • Discharge Notification: We also request a copy of your DD214.

Tuition Assistance

How to Apply

Each branch of the military has a specific web portal that service members must use to access tuition assistance. Contact your Education Services Officer who can provide the web portal for your branch of service or log onto www.GoArmyEd.com to get started.

 

 

Dependents

Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33)

How to Apply

  • Student dependents who have received Chapter 33 benefits must complete Form 22-1990 E.

  • Student dependents who are transferring from an institution need to fill out Form 22-1995.

  • Each term, dependents using GI Bill benefits must complete SLU certification process: Veteran's Certification Request.

Survivors' & Dependents' Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)

How to Apply

  • Students must go to the VA website and complete Form 22-5490.

  • The VA will then award benefits.

  • Chapter 35-established dependents must fill out Form 22-5495 and submit it to SLU Financial Aid Department when transferring from another college.

  • Each term, dependents using GI Bill benefits must complete SLU certification process: Veteran's Certification Request.

Fry Scholarship (Amendment to Post 9/11 GI Bill)

Louisiana Title 29 Dependents' Educational Assistance

How to Apply

  • Louisiana offers education assistance to surviving spouses of deceased Veterans as well as children of Veterans rated with 90% or more service-connected disability. Find a local LDVA VSO to apply.

 

In accordance with Title 38 US Code 3679 subsection (e), this school adopts the following additional provisions for any students using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while payment to the institution is pending from the VA.  This school will not:

  • Prevent the student’s enrollment;
  • Assess a late penalty fee to the student;
  • Require the student to secure alternative or additional funding;
  • Deny the student access to any resources (access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities) available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution.

However, to qualify for this provision, such students may be required to:

  • Produce the VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE) by the first day of class;
  • Provide a written request to be certified;
  • Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment as described in other institutional policies

Southeastern Louisiana University abides by Provision 1005 and provides in-state tuition to all Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship, Ch 30 and CH 33 recipients.
