Southeastern’s Summer eLearning Institute scheduled
Make plans now to join your colleagues for Southeastern’s Summer eLearning Institute,
an engaging four-day event designed to enhance your online teaching strategies. Hosted
by The Center for Faculty Excellence and the Office of Online Learning, the institute
is scheduled June 4 – 7, in Tinsley Hall, room 103.
Members of the Online Learning Committee have met continuously this semester
to identify faculty needs and plan for learning sessions. You'll find each day packed

Southeastern safety specialist named to national accreditation commission
Lu Yuan, interim head of the Southeastern Department of Computer Science and Industrial
Technology, has been re-appointed to a term as commission member for the ABET Applied
and Natural Science Accreditation Commission (ANSAC), one of the nation’s foremost
academic accrediting bodies.
Yuan, an associate professor and certified safety professional, will serve on
the 2018-2019 commission.
ABET is a non-profit, private accrediting agency for programs such as computer
science, applied science, including safety and health, engineering and engineering
technology, and is recognized as an official accrediting agency by the Council for
Higher Education Accreditation.
As a member of the commission, Yuan will participate in scheduled commission
meetings and serve as team chairman for one or more site visits to institutions seeking
accreditation or re-accreditation.
“The appointment recognizes the quality of Southeastern’s occupational safety,
health, and environment program, housed in the Department of Computer Science and
Industrial Technology, and also demonstrates the excellent reputation the program
has earned over recent years,” said Yuan.
Accreditation is a voluntary process and assures a program meets the quality
standards of the professions accredited. Southeastern’s bachelor’s program in occupational
safety, health and environment – the only one of its kind in the state – has been
accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, Inc.
since 2008.
The OSH&E program was also awarded a $1,500 donation from the Greater Baton Rouge
Industry Alliance recently, which was used for professional development opportunities
and in the recognition of multiple graduating seniors receiving Graduate Safety Practitioner
designations from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

Southeastern to host Summer Art Camp
Registration is now open for Southeastern’s Summer Art Camp scheduled July 9 – 19.
Scheduled Monday through Thursday, the camp runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. each day at
Clark Hall on Southeastern’s campus.
Campers from 5 to 14 are elegible to attend the camp. The camp fee is $65.
All students will complete a t-shirt design, model magic sculptures, zig zag
books and a printmaking project, said Associate Professor of Art Education Kim Finley.
“The workshop is eight days long, and students will complete eight different
projects, including painting and drawing, based on the theme ‘Get Art Smart!’ Learn
about famous artists as you make inspired artwork that also celebrates you,” Finley
said.
Campers enrolled in the workshop will be instructed by art students supervised
by Finley.
The camp is limited to the first 75 registrants, so early registration is recommended.

Alumni Association Tangi Chapter hosts shrimp, crawfish boil on May 18
The Tangi Chapter of the Southeastern Alumni Association will host a shrimp and crawfish
boil for alumni on May 18.
Scheduled at the Alumni Center, 500 University Ave., the event will take place
from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Soft drinks and beer will be provided.
The cost is $18 per person and free for lifetime alumni members. Space is
limited, so advance registration is required by the deadline of May 14. Free hamburgers
will be provided for children under 12.

Southeastern to host Camp Rec summer 2018, open house May 24
Southeastern’s Department of Recreational Sports and Wellness is ready to rock, roll,
and roar as an official ASTRO CAMP® 2018 during 11 weeks of “Camp Rec” this summer.
An open house is scheduled May 24, at 6 p.m., at the Pennington Student Activity Center,
located at the corner of University Avenue and General Pershing Avenue, for interested
individuals to meet camp counselors and learn more about this year’s camp.
Created for children ages 4 to 12 with themes like “Together We Go Farther, Moon,
Mars & Beyond,” the camp is an option for parents who want their children to have
fun and be physically active while developing social skills, confidence and independence.
Camp Rec is offered weekly beginning May 29 and ending Aug. 8. Scheduled from
8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, Camp Rec will have a variety of activities planned throughout
the week and will take place in the Pennington Student Activity Center.
“This year’s camp will include training and activities received straight from
NASA,” said Director of Recreational Sports and Wellness Seth Thomas. “Our weekly
day camp is full of a variety of activities, including but not limited to NASA explorations,
STEM activities, indoor swimming, sports, games, culinary activities, weekly celebrations
of our Campers of the Week, and our amazing off-campus field trip adventures.”
Thomas said each week’s focus is intended to improve a child’s health and fitness
and build self-confidence through activities that include outdoor adventures, team
building, arts and crafts, treasure hunts, relay races and more.
“We are committed to creating an unforgettable summer camp experience in a safe
and supportive environment,” said Thomas. “The Camp Rec experience is fun, exciting
and filled with challenging activities that teach the campers the values of trust,
friendship and teamwork.”
“Our camp counselors are all Southeastern students trained in CPR, First Aid
and Darkness to Light,” Thomas added. “We also offer a wonderful opportunity for a
select number of 13-15 year olds to serve as junior counselors. Those interested can
contact Assistant Director of Field Experience and Youth Programs Kathy Cusimano at
549-2353 for more information.”
The weekly fee of $160 for campers includes breakfast, lunch and afternoon snack,
field trip and all the supplies needed for the week. One t-shirt per child is included
with the first week of tuition.
Early hours from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. and after care from 4:15 to 6 p.m., are offered
at the rate of $15 per week for one and $30 per week for both early and late care.

Early Childhood Exposition held at the Louisiana Children's Discovery Center
 On May 1, a group of Southeastern’s Early Childhood Education teacher candidates partnered
with the Louisiana Children’s Discovery Center in Hammond for their annual Early Childhood
Exposition.
Area schools and other community members were invited to attend the event. The
theme was “Welcome to Seussville,” and children in attendance were able to experience
a variety of activities related to various Dr. Seuss books. Focus books included:
Put Me in the Zoo, The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat, Oh Say Can You Seed, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, Bartholomew and the Oobleck, and Mr. Brown Cow Can Moo, Can You?.
Dr. Tish Walters and Jill Barry served as the instructors involved with the event.
Both they and their teacher candidates look forward to this community event every
semester.
