Southeastern's on-campus food pantry helps meet students' nutritional needs

Friday, November 21, 2014

One year ago, Southeastern opened an on-campus food pantry to help meet the nutritional needs of its students. The pantry has since collected an abundance of non-perishable food items from the university community and distributed items to hundreds of students in need.

Staffed by alumni and community volunteers, the food pantry is located in room 226 of Mims Hall. Hours of operation are as follows:

  • Fall 2014 semester: Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays, 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

  • Thanksgiving Week: Tuesday, Nov. 25, 9 a.m. to noon

  • Semester break (Dec. 15-Jan. 1): Mondays, 9 to 11 a.m.

  • Spring 2015 semester: Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays, 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Students who wish to take advantage of the food pantry by visiting during operating hours and showing their student IDs. Students can visit the food pantry once per week and are allowed to get five to seven days' worth of food at each visit.

The food pantry collects non-perishable food items during campus events and accepts donations on an ongoing basis. The items most needed include rice, peanut butter, beans, oatmeal, grits and shelf-stable microwavable meals.

The food pantry was the first project funded by the "Phil the Pig" student philanthropy project. It is also supported by the Southeastern Foundation and the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs.
