You Be the Chemist winners named

HAMMOND – Winners of the You Be the Chemist Challenge, sponsored Friday (Feb. 21) by the Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Chemistry and Physics and the Tangipahoa Parish School System, were announced following the Quiz Bowl-type exam involving students from 18 middles schools in the parish.

Pictured are, from left, Daniel McCarthy, dean of the College of Science and Technology; Joe Schaffer, director of technology at Bercen, Inc.; Luke Lewis of Sumner Middle School, first place; Mallory Matthews of Loranger Middle School, second place; Jackson Latner, third place, and finalists Makayla Baham and Deanna Reynolds, all of Sumner; and Theresa Hamilton, chief academic office of the Tangipahoa Parish School System. Not show is fianalist Breanna Gottschalck of Loranger Middle School. The six students will participate in the state competition to be held in April at LSU. Bercen, Inc., a specialty chemical company in Denham Springs, provided financial support for the event.
