Students, faculty inducted into Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society

HAMMOND – Nearly 50 students and faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University were
inducted into the university’s chapter of the prestigious national honor society,
Phi Kappa Phi, on Thursday (April 21).
Awards for outstanding junior students from Southeastern’s five academic colleges
were presented to: Maria Alphonso, Ponchatoula, College of Arts, Humanities and Social
Sciences; Ashley Nelson, Loranger, College of Business; Logan Cancienne, Luling, College
of Education; Amber Lasher, Hammond, College of Nursing and Health Sciences.
Recognized with the Outstanding Freshman Award was Madelyn Jarman of Abita Springs,
while Katherine Wall of Jennings was cited as the Outstanding Honor Student. The society’s
Lou Ballard Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Rahul Shrestha of Hammond.
Faculty and alumni inducted included Agnieszka Gutthy of Tickfaw, professor of
foreign languages; Catherine Tijerino of Hammond, assistant professor of library science;
and Julie Perise of Ponchatoula, Southeastern Alumni Association.
To be considered for membership in the organization, a student must be in the
top 10 percent of their senior or graduate class or a second semester junior in the
top 7.5 percent of his or her class.
