HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University student organization Reconnect
is hosting a farmers market on Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in front
of the Student Union.
The student organization is sponsored by the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department
and is expected to have at least 15 vendors. Various foods and drinks like fresh produce,
barbecue chicken, hot tamales, crawfish pies, specialty pies, lavender soda, chocolate
flavored coffee and more will be featured at the farmers market. Vendors will have
specialty treats and homemade jellies. Local crafters and artisans will have pottery,
handmaid knits and handcrafted jewelry. Attendees can also expect live music from
Armeal Cameron.
“Our overall goals for hosting this event are to promote and support environmental
education and the local economy, create a sense of community on campus and within
student organizations, and encourage consumers to eat ethical and sustainable local
produce,” said Reconnect Farmer’s Market Manager Tiffany Bel.
The organization will host two more farmers markets this semester at the same
time and location on Wednesday, March 18 and Wednesday, April 22.
A student environmental club, Reconnect participates in the Real Food Challenge,
a national effort among college students to promote the use of locally grown, healthy
and sustainable food products.
