HAMMOND – The History and Political Science Department at Southeastern Louisiana
University has scheduled the annual Veterans Day Lecture Thursday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.,
in Pottle Auditorium. History graduate student Lauren Guillory will present “Reconnaissance,
Inter-Aircraft Combat, Bombing, and Close Air Support: The Development of Airpower
and Airpower Strategy in the First World War.” The event is free and open to the public.
“When WWI began, aircraft were made of canvas and wood and could not exceed 60
mph,” said History and Political Science Department Head Bill Robison. “Yet, as Lauren
Guillory shows, the war established the roles of reconnaissance, inter-aircraft combat,
bombing, and close air support that reached full potential in WWII. The main Western
European powers – Britain, France, and Germany – developed strategies to utilize airpower,
and the United States adopted these strategies upon joining the war in 1917.”
