Clifton Dean Morgan of Independence, locksmith master at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Physical Plant, was among 12 people chosen this year to receive the Charles E. Dunbar Career Service Award.
The award is named for the founder of the Louisiana Civil Service League and co-author of the original civil service law in Louisiana.
“I am honored to have been selected for this award, to know the work you put in does not go unnoticed,” Morgan said. “Southeastern has been a part of my family for over 40 years. To be able to help others in my Southeastern family and my community is rewarding in itself.”
Morgan began working at Southeastern’s Physical Plant as a professional mover in the moving crew in October of 1977. He advanced throughout his career, holding positions such as maintenance repairman, locksmith, and now master locksmith.
“Over the years, I have watched Dean selflessly volunteer his time to help others in need and work diligently to ensure high customer satisfaction,” said Assistant Director of Building Services Mark Whitmer, who also nominated Morgan for the award. “He dedicates himself fully to his endeavors and sees them through.”
In addition to his locksmith duties at Southeastern, over the last 10 years, Morgan has also become the “go to guy” for audio/visual needs on campus. He manages sound systems for special events and occasions, including athletic games, graduations and conferences. He also drives busses for Southeastern athletic events, band fairs, parades and summer Upward Bound programs.
“Dean always has a great attitude and a positive outlook. I have seen his ‘Pay It Forward’ demeanor at work,” Whitmer said. “He always volunteers his time to help at work and loves to cook and serve our community in his spare time. He is a true ‘Southeastern Lion’ at heart.”
