The work of a staff reporter of Southeastern Louisiana University’s student-run newspaper, The Lion’s Roar, recently placed first in the category of Editorials in the Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors competition.
Dylan Meche, a sophomore political science major from Baton Rouge, was recognized for his editorial writing. The three pieces selected for recognition opined various topics ranging from registering to vote, open relationships, and the struggles of students new to campus.
“It is very exciting to be recognized in this way,” said Meche. “I am extremely thankful to have been part of this wonderful newspaper staff throughout the past year. The creative work that my fellow staff reporters put out on a weekly basis makes me proud to be associated with The Lion’s Roar. These wonderful, talented and determined people have allowed our paper to reach new heights, and I am looking forward to seeing how high we can go.”
Since joining the staff of The Lion’s Roar as a reporter last October, Meche has been assigned to write both news and opinion pieces.
“It is great to hear that Dylan has been recognized for his editorial writing,” said Jacob Summerville, editor-in-chief of The Lion’s Roar and a political science junior from Greenwell Springs. “Ever since he joined the staff last fall, Dylan has been a strong writer and a diligent reporter. His first-place award is fitting for the amount of thought and structuring he puts into each opinion piece. I’m excited to see where else he’ll win awards and how he’ll improve as a reporter.”
“Throughout Dylan’s time with The Lion’s Roar, he has proven himself to be an excellent writer,” said The Lion’s Roar Assistant Editor Prakriti Adhikari, a junior accounting major from Hammond. “He works hard on every story he is assigned, and I am pleased that his hard work got recognized. Dylan has an excellent style of expressing his opinions, and most importantly, he is persevering. I know this award will motivate him even more.”
More than 1,200 entries were submitted for the two-state competition, which was sponsored by the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University. The AP is a not-for-profit news cooperative representing thousands of U.S. media organizations.
“I’m extremely proud of Dylan and all of our reporters,” said Director of Student Publications Lee E. Lind. “This recognition by the AP indicates how talented and dedicated our students are and how important their work is to the community.”
Typically, the distribution of awards occurs during the annual Louisiana-Mississippi Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors awards banquet. Due to the current health crisis, the organization decided not to host the annual event this year.
The student staff of The Lion’s Roar continue to produce content for the weekly newspaper despite not being on campus, Lind said. Readers can access content produced by student staff reporters through Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @lionsroarnews, issuu.com, and via the newspaper’s website, lionsroarnews.com.
