HAMMOND – The History and Political Science Department at Southeastern Louisiana University will present its annual Constitution Day Lecture at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 6, in the Student Union Theatre. The first of this year’s Fanfare lectures, it is free and open to the public.
Undergraduate Coordinator of History and Political Science and Instructor of Political Science Bridget Hester will deliver the lecture titled “Voting and the United States Constitution.” She will examine the constitutional history of voting in the United States and why it continues to be such a controversial political issue.
“Modern democracies usually guarantee the right to vote in their constitutional document and implement practices to ensure fair and open elections,” Hester said. “The United States Constitution, however, does not include an affirmative provision for universal suffrage, and voting rights continue to be a source of political disputes in America today.”
