Lectures, music, and readings highlight Fanfare’s upcoming week

Events surrounding lectures, readings, and music are scheduled during the upcoming week of the 39th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences.

     Events surrounding lectures, readings, and music are scheduled during the upcoming week of the 39th season of Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences.
     First up is a Google Meet video call with Louisiana Poet Laureate and Southeastern English faculty member Alison Pelegrin on Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. Pelegrin will discuss, “How to Craft a Braided Narrative.” Participants should go to http://meet.google.com/pfi-xhsf-rhm to join the video presentation.
     On Oct. 9, at 11 a.m., the History and Political Science Department will present the next Then and Now lecture in the series. Scheduled in Pottle Auditorium, the lecture, titled “Preserving the Past, Shaping the Future: Exploring the Impact and Importance of Historic Preservation,” will be given by Bailey Hall. National Register Coordinator at the Division of Historical Preservation, Hall will discuss historic preservation’s vital role in maintaining our cultural identity, driving economic growth, and providing educational opportunities. 
     Hall also will examine the evolution of historic preservation and the methods used to protect our heritage, explore the challenges faced in preservation efforts, and showcase successful projects that highlight the positive outcomes.
     Playing the Staircase is scheduled Oct. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hammond Regional Arts Center. In an original night of live music, Call * Time and Jupiter Field will give audience members listening enjoyment through their original lyrics in an intimate setting.
     The cover charge is $10, but children 12 and under are admitted free.
     The Tangipahoa Parish Library – Hammond Branch will host Booktoberfest, a free book festival on Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The library celebrates and encourages literacy for all ages. This fun day at the Hammond library will offer free food, local authors, hands-on activities and, of course, free books for everyone who attends.
     The Hammond Regional Arts Center is “Celebrating the Written Word” also on Oct. 12. Scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., the event will feature a reading by Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin, as well as a question and answer session and book signing. Event programming is free.
     Jacmel Inn’s award-winning mixologist Julia Cervini has crafted two signature cocktails, “Strawberry Fields” and “The Tipsy Cherry,” for the event and will be serving alongside Jacmel’s owner Alfonso Flores.

READINGS ARE FUNDAMENTAL – Fanfare, Southeastern Louisiana University’s annual fall festival of the arts, humanities and social sciences, will present Louisiana Poet Laureate Alison Pelegrin in two events this week. An online discussion with Pelegrin on “How to Craft a Braided Narrative” is scheduled Oct. 8, and she will give a reading during “Celebrating the Written Word,” followed by a question and answer session and a book signing, at the Hammond Regional Arts Center on Oct. 12.
