She earned her Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from the University of North Dakota, where her dissertation examined juror credibility evaluations of gay and lesbian witnesses. She also holds a J.D. with distinction from the University of North Dakota School of Law. She focused her legal studies on business and criminal law. Dr. Olson teaches courses in criminal justice, particularly those related to the law and legal system. Her research centers on sexual and gender bias in the criminal system, criminal sentencing patterns, and school shooters.
