Dr. Jackie Guendouzi is department head of Health and Human Sciences, and a professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. She previously held a post-doctoral research position at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, an Associate Professorship at Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom, and an Associate Professorship at the University of South Alabama. She teaches graduate classes in acquired cognitive disorders; communication in healthcare settings, and reading evidence-based research for healthcare professionals.

She holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, post-graduate certification in education from the University of Central England, and a Certificate of Accreditation in Higher Education, Staff, Educational Development Association (SEDA, accrediting body of professional university teachers, UK). She believes that teaching is one of the most vital parts of her career, as she sees students as our most valuable resource—the world's future. Her work in cognitive processing has shown her that learning doesn't come easily to everyone. This is why she believes educators must constantly sharpen their skills and find new ways to connect with each new generation of learners.

Area of Expertise

Her research has allowed her to explore the application of psycholinguistic theories to the socio-pragmatic aspects of communication, particularly in relation to dementia. Over the years, she has had the opportunity to contribute to the field through various publications, including numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and several chapters in edited collections focusing on clinical linguistics. She also co-authored a book, Discourses of Dementia, and edited three collections, including The Routledge International Handbook of Psycholinguistic and Cognitive Processes. She has been honored to receive several acknowledgments for her research, including the College of Nursing and Health Science’s Researcher of the Year award and Southeastern Louisiana University’s President’s Award for Research in 2013.
