About Our School

SLU Lab School is a collaborative effort of the Tangipahoa Parish School System and Southeastern Louisiana University College of Education. Our school is accredited by the Louisiana State Department of Education.

We were established as the "Training School" and opened our doors on January 16, 1940. Our faculty and staff are proud to be a part of an educational heritage that has nurtured the mental, social, and physical growth of children, youth, and adults for over eighty years.

We are located in the Southeastern Louisiana University Charles E. Cate Teacher Education Center, which is a specifically designed learning facility including instructional classroom areas, music, art, and physical education facilities, a media center, and a science lab.

Our school motto, "We are Caring, Creative, and Encouraging.  We strive for excellence in all areas by being better today than we were yesterday.  We are the future" is valued by our school family. We believe that having these values will help us build the future, and we work hard to improve ourselves every day so that we can improve our world.

There are 260 students that attend our school from pre-kindergarten through the eighth grade. We have one section of each grade level and offer not only the standard educational courses, but also art, physical education, and music.   Many of our students participate in the gifted program or in the talented art, music, and or drama programs offered through Tangipahoa Parish School System.

Opportunities to take part in team sports such as basketball, track, volleyball, and cheerleading are also offered to our students.

Enrichment activities at the Lab School are offered through events such as the art show , science and social studies fairs, and various field trips. Our students also enjoy opportunities to work collaboratively with campus organizations and Hammond area community and business groups.

The Southeastern Laboratory School is the foundation of bright futures. A high percentage of our students consistently score above state and national averages on standardized tests, earn honor roll status in high school, achieve a high grade point average in college, and enjoy successful careers.

Our students' experiences and activities are conducted under the leadership of the principal and faculty in cooperation and collaboration with the Southeastern's College of Education faculty and staff, educational researchers, and Tangipahoa Parish School System.
