On Campus Housing
We highly recommend that new international students apply to live on campus their
first year in the U.S. Not only will you have all of the comforts of home, but you
will also meet many new friends, have direct access to the library, classrooms, and
computer labs, and be close to campus activities.
If you are interested in living on campus, you must submit the online application and the prepayments and processing fees. Information on how to apply can be found on our University Housing web page.
Please note that the International Services Office cannot assist you with arranging
your living accommodations. Though we are happy to assist you with any questions you
may have, it is your responsibility to submit the housing application and pay the
fees. Failure to do so will result in you not receiving housing on campus. Should
you arrive without having made living accommodations, we will be unable to temporarily house you.
Off Campus Housing
If you decide to live off campus, the city of Hammond has many apartments located
close to Southeastern’s campus. It is important to note, however, that most of these
apartments are unfurnished. Should you decide to lease an apartment, be prepared to
locate furniture for your new accommodation. Southeastern’s Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs works to assist international students with grocery shopping, securing donated furniture
and bicycles, English conversation classes, and much more.
Apartments that are located near Southeastern’s campus are not associated with the
university and they are owned by private individuals and companies. Therefore, you
can expect to follow different rules and regulations and pay different prices. Anytime
a student wishes to rent an apartment, they are expected to sign a lease. This is
an agreement between you and the owner of the apartments that stipulates the cost
of rent and is your acknowledgment of their rules for living there.Leases are like
contracts and can last anywhere from six months to a year. Failure to abide by a signed
lease can result in fees and loss of a security deposit. Because each lease is different
depending upon who you rent from, please defer to that apartment’s rental office for
specific information.
Tenants of an apartment are also usually expected to assume responsibility for payment
of all utilities (electricity, gas, phone, cable, etc). In addition, you must be prepared
to pay a security deposit and the first month’s rent upon signing a lease agreement.
