Commencement Exercises

Southeastern Commencement Ceremonies scheduled for May 18 and 19 have been relocated from Strawberry Stadium.  As the University Center is currently unavailable due to needed renovations and maintenance, the Commencement ceremonies will take place in multiple venues across campus.  Please see below for specific ceremony locations and 2 time changes (College of Nursing Graduate School and College of Education Graduate School).

 

SPRING 2021 COMMENCEMENT

- All in attendance will be required to wear masks and maintain social distance
- Graduates are asked to limit invited guests to six (6) individuals (revised as of April 29, 2021)
- Only guests with a ticket will gain entrance. All ceremonies will be videotaped and available on the Southeastern Channel and YouTube.

 
The Commencement Committee congratulates all candidates! We hope that Commencement will be a rewarding experience for you and your family and friends. As no practice for Commencement Exercises is possible, we present the following instructions for your information. 
 

Commencement Schedules

College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences - Tuesday, May 18 at 9:00 a.m.

The Student Union Theatre will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Master of Arts, Master of Music, Master of Science, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts in World Languages & Bachelor of Arts in Spanish.

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union outside of rooms 2202 - 2205.

The Vonnie Borden Theatre located in D. Vickers Hall  will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees : Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Arts in History, & Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. 

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of D. Vickers outside of rooms 119 and 123 and 140 and 141.

Pottle Auditorium will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Art in Art, Bachelor of Art in English, & Bachelor of Art in Psychology. 

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of Pottle outside of rooms 112, 114, 116, and 118  and 111, 113, and 115.

The Student Union Grand Ballroom will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving President's Medals and the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology & Bachelor of General Studies.

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.

College of Business - Tuesday, May 18 at 6:00 p.m.

The Student Union Theatre will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Master of Business Administration

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union outside of rooms 2202 - 2205.

The Vonnie Borden Theatre located in D. Vickers Hall  will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees : Bachelor of Business Administration. 

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of D. Vickers outside of rooms 119 and 123 and 140 and 141.

Pottle Auditorium will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Bachelor of Science in Finance &Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain Management . 

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of Pottle outside of rooms 112, 114, 116, and 118  and 111, 113, and 115.

College of Nursing and Health Sciences - Wednesday, May 19 at 9:00 a.m. and NOON. 

The Student Union Theatre will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Bachelor of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences.

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union outside of rooms 2202 - 2205.

Pottle Auditorium will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology & Bachelor of Science in Sports Management 

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of Pottle.  

The Student Union Grand Ballroom will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the President's Medal and the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Social Work, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Management, & Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Promotion.

8:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.

**The Student Union Grand Ballroom will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees: Doctor of Nurse Practice, Master of Science in Nursing, &  Master of Science. 

11:00 a.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.

College of Education and College of Science and Technology - Wednesday, May 19 at 4:00 and 6:00 p.m.

**The KIVA located in the Teacher Education Center will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees for the College of Education: Doctor of Education and Master of Education.

3:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the first floor hallways of the TEC.

Pottle Auditorium will serve as the Commencement location for all undergraduate candidates within the College of Education, including Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Elementary Education & Special Education, English Education, Health and Physical Education, Lions Connected, Middle School Education,  and Social Studies Education.

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns in the hallways of Pottle outside of rooms 112, 114, 116, and 118  and 111, 113, and 115.

 

The Student Union Theatre will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the following degrees within the College of Science and Technology: Associate of Applied ScienceBachelor of Science in Industrial Technology; and Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety, Health and Environment.

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union outside of rooms 2202 - 2205.

The Student Union Grand Ballroom will serve as the Commencement location for candidates receiving the President's Medal and the following degrees within the College of Science and Technology: Master of Science, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Bachelor of Science in Chemistry,  Bachelor of Science in Computer Science,  Bachelor of Science, Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Science in Information Technology & Bachelor of Science in Math.

5:00 p.m. Candidates will assemble in caps and gowns on the 2nd floor of the Student Union.

 

 

   

Caps and Gowns

cap and gownAll graduates participating in Commencement are required to purchase commencement regalia from the Southeastern Louisiana University Bookstore. In addition to caps and gowns, graduates may purchase graduation announcements, personalized name cards, class rings, and diploma plaques. The University Bookstore is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday. For further assistance, call 985-549-5393 or email bookstore@southeastern.edu.

Commencement Parking

Candidates should arrive early.  Parking will be available in lots around the Student Union, Pottle, D Vickers and TEC.

Procession

Prior to entering the venue, candidates of a College will be lined up in alphabetical order by degree, presented with a "reader card" and, if appropriate, presented with an honor stole. Candidates will be led by their dean and reader into the venue.  They will proceed to their seats as directed by Marshals.

Recession

Candidates will leave the venue as directed by the Marshals .  

Degree Conferral

cap and gownThe President of the University will confer degrees en masse. Following this and upon a signal from the Marshals, the reader and candidates in each College will proceed in single file to the side of the stage where candidates will provide their "reader card," ascend the stairs, cross the stage as their names are called, receive their diploma covers (there will be no handshake) , and return to their seats from the outside of the row.   

Special Accommodation

No matter the accommodation, you are welcome to join us at the commencement rehearsal usually held the day before the commencement exercises begin. There will be no rehearsals with guests. We will confirm the date and time of the rehearsal when you notify us about an accommodation.
 
Deaf/HOH interpreters for students and guests
Deaf/HOH interpreters are always in attendance at the commencement ceremonies. However, we will work with you to make sure you and/or your guests have an uninterrupted view of the interpreters.
 
Blind or low vision
Contact us if you would like the opportunity to check out the seating/stage layout, to locate the student lineup area and to tell us how you would like us to assist you on commencement day.
 
Mobility assistance for students
Artificial turf considerations – not wheel friendly
The football field in Strawberry Stadium is covered with artificial turf. The turf hinders the easy movement of the wheels found on scooters, wheelchairs and walkers. Contact us if you would like to check out the artificial turf and to tell us how we can assist you on commencement day.
 
Ramp to the stage

Steps up to stage and down from the stage
As your name is called, you will go onto the stage to receive your diploma cover. Will you need assistance climbing four steps? Would you like to attend rehearsal to see the steps?  

First Aid

University Police will be on duty to provide assistance in the event of an emergency. 

Photographs

Photographs of graduates will be taken during the ceremony by a commercial photography service.  Each student will be contacted directly by the company for order placement and free proofs. Individuals will not be allowed on the field of the stadium to take personal photographs 

Mailing of Diplomas

Diplomas will be mailed on June 11, 2021.  To notify the Office of the Registrar of a change in diploma address, send a letter stating your correct address to Office of the Registrar, SLU 10752, Hammond, LA 70402 or visit NCFA, room 122 or email us at Gradapp@southeastern.edu.  (The Alumni Office provides mini-diplomas at Lion4Life Launch Party)  

Honors Graduates

The University will present stoles to honor graduates who are receiving a baccalaureate degree or an associate's degree.  Honor graduates are students who have an overall grade point average of 3.500 or better.  Questions regarding stoles should be directed to personnel involved in lining up candidates.

Commencement Dress Do's and Don'ts:

  1. Leave bags at home.  No security is provided for items unattended.
  2. Dress comfortably. Candidates will be at Southeastern for a minimum of three hours; the event is a combination of standing and sitting so dress comfortably for both.
  3. All candidates should wear dark shoes.
  4. Men should wear shirt and tie, dark dress slacks.
  5. Stilettos are not permitted on the stadium turf.
  6. No shorts, jeans, or beach sandals should be worn.
  7. Robes should be zipped closed.
  8. Don't forget your regalia! 

 

Special Notes and Tips:

  1. Set an alarm or have a buddy system to make sure you arrive on time.
  2. Proper decorum is expected of all participants. Noisemakers, confetti, and other similar objects are disruptive to the ceremony and are not permitted.
  3. Any excessive decorations on gowns or mortarboards are distracting and therefore inappropriate.
  4. Only University-approved stoles, cords, ribbons or medals associated with academic honors or membership in Phi Kappa Phi or the Thirteen Club may be worn with the cap and gown. Students may be asked to remove any adornment that is deemed inappropriate by a commencement official.
  5. Candidates may not carry any personal items in the processional, including cell phones, video cameras and other electronic devices. No security is provided for these items if left unattended.
  6. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in and around Strawberry Stadium. Food and drinks of any kind are not allowed.
  7. The cap tassel for faculty and graduates is to the left front.  For undergraduates, the tassel is right front then shifted to the left after receiving diploma.  
  8. Commencement Exercises will last approximately one hour.  Out of respect for all degree candidates, all participants are expected to remain for the entire ceremony.
  9. Plan in advance where to meet your family afterwards.  Graduates are escorted out of the Stadium following the ceremony.
