CREST Scholars Program

The Coastal Restoration and Enhancement through Science and Technology (CREST) Program
is proud to announce the introduction of a CREST Scholars’ Program at Southeastern
Louisiana University. CREST is making $10,000 available to graduate students or upper
level undergraduate students at Southeastern.

EBS Pearl River Study Scholarship

The Harvey L. Foster Foundation for Science Education will award one or more scholarships
each year of up to $2000 to deserving students. The scholarship is for one year. Qualifying
students are those already enrolled in Southeastern Louisiana University and who are
either pursing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the field of science, specifically
the areas of biology, chemistry, or engineering. This scholarship will be awarded
to the top applicant(s) as recommended by the Foundation’s Board of Directors during
the Spring.

Major Kenneth E. Dyson Memorial Scholarship

The Major Kenneth E. Dyson Memorial Scholarship is awarded each spring to Southeastern
graduates that have been accepted into medical or dental school. A minimum overall
GPA of 3.2 is required to be eligible.

There is no special application process for this award. 

Students accepted into medical or dental school should notify the pre-medical advisor
via email in order to claim the award. Please include a copy of the acceptance letter/email.

The Major Kenneth E. Dyson Memorial Scholarship is awarded at the end of the spring
semester. Students who notify the pre-medical advisor after the award will be included
in next year’s award.

Brandon Buras Memorial Scholarship

The Brandon Buras Memorial Scholarship is awarded to full-time seniors that are in
the process of applying to an accredited medical school.

Official Criteria:

1.) Must be a senior pre-medical student.
2.) Must be in the process of being evaluated by the Medical Evaluation Committee. 
3.) Must be from Tangipahoa, Livingston, St. Helena, or Washington parish.

To apply, email the application form along with a current transcript, and MCAT score, to the pre-medical advisor.

This scholarship may be awarded to one or two students who meet the criteria in the
fall semester of his or her senior year.

Nancy Kathryn O’Neil Memorial Scholarship

The Nancy Kathryn O’Neil Memorial Scholarship is awarded to full-time science majors (Biology,
Physics, or Chemistry) from the Northshore (Tangipahoa, St. Tammany Parishes) that
apply to medical, dental, or veterinary school.

A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 is required to apply. 
Applicants must explain their ties to the Northshore – including which Northshore
high school they attended.

To apply, email the application form along with a current transcript and a short letter explaining your ties to the Northshore
to the pre-medical advisor.

This scholarship is renewable – students must reapply each year.

William F. Sherman Memorial Scholarship

The William F. Sherman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to full-time seniors (85+ hours)
applying to medical school that demonstrate a financial need.

Official Criteria:

1.) Full-time Pre-med student.

2.) Senior standing (minimum of 85 hours).

3.) Demonstrated financial need.

4.) Brief written statement addressing financial need and how they would benefit from
the scholarship.

5.) Must have or be in the process of applying to medical school.

6.) Minimum GPA of 3.3.

7.) Preference will be given to a student with a proven work history while in college. 

To apply, email the application form along with a current transcript, MCAT score, and one short letter of recommendation
to the pre-medical advisor.

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable.

Lisa Aucoin Endowed Scholarship

The purpose of the Lisa Aucoin Endowed Scholarship in Biology is to provide financial
support to a deserving student who is attending Southeastern Louisiana University
and majoring in Biology or an Art student working with photography of reptiles and
amphibians or any other Biology related program.

Department of Chemistry and Physics

Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship

The Zachary Alan Bourg Physics Research Apprenticeship provides students with the
opportunity to conduct research with a Southeastern Louisiana University Physics professor.
Awardees will receive $1,000 per academic year ($500 per fall and spring semesters).
The award is continued for a maximum of four years as long as the awardee meets the
requirements for the continuation of the award. The recipient of the scholarship is
chosen by a committee consisting of all tenured physics faculty. 

The minimum requirements are

i. Entering full-time freshman physics major at Southeastern Louisiana University.

ii. ACT composite score of 26 or higher.

iii. High school GPA of 3.5 or higher.

iv. Successful completion of rigorous math and science classes while in high school.

v. Demonstrated involvement in science or math outside of the classroom, with greater
weight given to demonstrated involvement in physics.

Other criteria that will be taken into account are

i. Preference will be given to eligible applicants from Ponchatoula High School (Ponchatoula,
LA), South Terrebonne High School (Bourg, LA), and Ellender Memorial High School (Houma,
LA)

Walter Corkern Scholarship in Chemistry

The scholarship, in the amount of approximately $300 per year, is awarded to a degree-seeking
chemistry major. The recipient of the scholarship is chosen by a committee consisting
of all tenured chemistry faculty. 

The minimum requirements are

i. A GPA of 3.0, both overall and in all chemistry courses.

ii. Completion of at least CHEM 265/266/267/268.

Other criteria that will be taken into account are

i. Interest in chemistry as a career.

ii. Financial need.

iii. Involvement in chemistry outside the classroom.

iv. Volunteer work related to chemistry.

v. Academic performance.

Norman Higginbotham Scholarship in Physics

The scholarship, in the amount of approximately $300 per year, is awarded to a degree-seeking
physics major. The recipient of the scholarship is chosen by a committee consisting
of all tenured physics faculty. 

The minimum requirements are

i. A GPA of 3.0, both overall and in all physics courses.

ii. Completion of at least PHYS 221/222/223/224.

Other criteria that will be taken into account are

i. Academic performance.

ii. Interest in physics as a career.

iii. Financial need.

iv. Involvement in physics outside the classroom.

Jack Knight Scholarship in Chemistry

The scholarship, in the amount of approximately $1,150 per year, is awarded to a degree-seeking
chemistry major. The recipient of the scholarship is chosen by a committee consisting
of all tenured chemistry faculty. 

The minimum requirements are

i. A GPA of 3.0, both overall and in all chemistry courses.

ii. Completion of at least CHEM 121/122/123/124.

Other criteria that will be taken into account are

i. Interest in chemistry as a career.

ii. Financial need.

iii. Involvement in chemistry outside the classroom.

iv. Volunteer work related to chemistry.

v. Academic performance.

J. E. and Mattye Lou Martin Scholarship in Physics

The scholarship, in the amount of approximately $1,000 per year, is awarded to a degree-seeking
physics major. The recipient of the scholarship is chosen by a committee consisting
of all tenured physics faculty. 

The minimum requirements are

i. A GPA of 3.0 overall.

ii. Good moral character.

Other criteria that will be taken into account are

i. Academic performance.

ii. Interest in physics as a career.

iii. Financial need.

iv. Involvement in physics outside the classroom.

 

Department of Computer Science

Tracie Jeansonne Scholarship

Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA or a minimum 2.75 college GPA. The
student must be majoring in I.T., exhibit good moral character and work ethic, and
enrolled full time.

James R. Owens Scholarship

High School GPA 3.0 or higher, Upper classman at Southeastern, overall GPA 2.75 or
higher, I.T. major or freshman plans on majoring in I.T., must be of good moral character
and strong work ethic, full-time student, may keep for 8 semesters as long as they
keep a 2.75 GPA

Joey Lewis Scholarship

Recipient must be enrolled full-time, major in I.T., and have a 3.0 or higher high
school GPA or 2.75 college GPA. Must have good moral character, and demonstrate a
friendly, outgoing, and caring attitude.

Walter L. Drott Scholarship

4-year I.T. major, minimum 3.0 GPA and good academic standing, Full time student,
active in university and/or department students organization(s), good moral character,
earned at least 75 hours toward I.T. degree.

Francis C. St. Blanc Scholarship

Must be a full-time student with at least 60 hours toward I.T. degree, must have 2.5
GPA, must demonstrate financial need, preference to student pursuing Drafting.

Thomas A. Utsey, Jr. Scholarship

Full-time student, 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need, preference is to be given
to any student pursuing private pilot’s license or the upgrading of license.

Theodore G. “Teddy” Betz, Jr. Scholarship

Full-time student, at least 60 hours toward I.T. degree, 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial
need.

John Searles Scholarship

Recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in I.T. with a minimum 2.75
GPA. Must be of good moral character with a strong work ethic.

William Curran Scholarship

Recipient must have a minimum overall college GPA of 3.0. Beginning freshmen must
have a minimum overall high school GPA of 3.0. Must be majoring in Computer Science
and be an initiated member of the Association of Computing Machinery. Beginning freshmen
must be planning to join the Association of Computing Machinery. Must be enrolled
full-time.

SGA Endowed Scholarship in Science and Technology

Recipient must be a junior (completing 45 hours of course work at Southeastern), and
major in one of the disciplines in the College of Science and Technology. A minimum
3.0 GPA is required. Must have a record of active participation in registered Southeastern
student organizations, provide evidence of involvement in community service, and be
enrolled full-time.

 

Department of Industrial and Engineering Technology

The GBRASSE Scholarship

Full-time sophomore, junior or senior OSH&E Majors in good standing with the university
are eligible for this scholarship.

Linda Sullivan Scholarship

Full-time OSH&E Majors with good moral character and strong work ethic; Incoming Freshman.
High School GPA 3.0, Returning student 2.75 college GPA. May keep for 8 semesters
as long as they keep a 2.75 GPA.

Thomas A. Utsey, Jr. Scholarship

Full-time student, 2.5 GPA, demonstrate financial need, preference is to be given
to any student pursuing private pilot’s license or the upgrading of license.

SGA Endowed Scholarship in Science and Technology

Recipient must be a junior (completing 45 hours of course work at Southeastern), and
major in one of the disciplines in the College of Science and Technology. A minimum
3.0 GPA is required. Must have a record of active participation in registered Southeastern
student organizations, provide evidence of involvement in community service, and be
enrolled full-time.

 

Department of Mathematics

Dr. Robert Carl Brown Endowed Scholarship in Math

The Southeastern Mathematics Department Scholarship Committee will determine eligible
students and solicit recommendations from their mathematics instructors. The purpose
of the scholarship is to assist a full-time student majoring in Mathematics. A minimum
of 30 semester hours is required in addition to the minimum cumulative grade point
average of 3.0 at Southeastern. The scholarship also requires that the student be
well rounded with participation in university and community activities.

Ruth C. Carter Memorial Scholarship

Recipient must be a Mathematics major and have a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Mark Dugopolski Sophomore Award

The Southeastern Mathematics Department Scholarship Committee will determine eligible
students and solicit recommendations from their mathematics instructors. The purpose
of the scholarship is to assist one or more full-time (spring semester) sophomores
majoring in mathematics or mathematics education. A minimum of 30 semester hours earned
at Southeastern prior to the spring semester of the award, with a minimum GPA of 3.0
is required. Students must have earned at least 13 semester hours in Math courses
numbered 200 and above and complete Math 201 with a minimum GPA of 3.0

Antimony L. Gerhardt Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics

Recipient must be enrolled full-time and majoring in Mathematics with a minimum of
3.0 GPA in all math courses and a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA. Must be a junior or
senior for the initial semester the scholarship is awarded or a high school student
enrolled at Southeastern through the Superior Juniors Program, has completed Math
200 and Math 201, and will be enrolled in more courses that are tuition subsidized
by the university or state for the semester (s) in which the scholarship is awarded.
Must be an active member of a high school or college community service organization,
and be of good moral chartacter. Preference will be given to a member of Phi Mu Epsilon.

Kenneth G. Holder Math Education Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a graduate from any public school in Tangipahoa Parish.
The student must show a financial need, leadership abilities, be an entering freshman
and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Mathematics Faculty Scholarship

Recipient must be a Mathematics or Mathematics Education major, be an entering freshman
or transfer with less than 12 hours, and have a 24 ACT composite score with a minimum
of 24 on the Mathematics portion and a minimum of 18 in English.

Dr. Margo Davis Scholarship

Number of awards: One scholarship per year. Person or organization providing the assistance:
Friends of Dr. Margo Davis, deceased faculty member in the Department of Mathematics.
A student must (1) be a regularly enrolled mathematics major at Southeastern; (2)
have an overall grade point average of at least 2.5; (3) have a grade point average
in mathematics of at least 3.2; (4) have completed at least 21 semester hours of college
mathematics; (5) have at least a semester’s work yet to be completed during the academic
year. No student shall receive the scholarship more than once. Procedures for making
application: there is no application procedure. All eligible students are considered.
The scholarship amount is determined by the amount of the trust earnings.

Joyce Travis Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics

Recipient must be a Mathematics or Mathematics Education major. Preference will be
given to a new student at Southeastern. Entering freshman or transfer with less than
12 hours, and have a 24 ACT composite score with a minimum of 24 on the Mathematics
portion and be eligible for take ENGL 101 or above. Transfer students should have
a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and also be eligible for ENGL 101 or above.
