HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University Theatre will present the mainstage production of Melancholy Play by Sarah Ruhl at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts in downtown Hammond.
Scheduled in the Columbia Studio Theatre, the production will run from Nov. 15 – 18, with a start time of 7:30 p.m. each evening.
Instructor of Theatre and Director of the production Anne-Liese Fox said Southeastern Theatre is enjoying its second year of the new bachelor in theatre degree while it awaits the renovation of The Vonnie Borden Theatre and the opening of the new laboratory theatre in the Fall of 2025. In the meantime, Southeastern Theatre is presenting in various venues on campus and in downtown Hammond.
“The second production of the season is the contemporary farce Melancholy Play by Sarah Ruhl, featuring original music by Greg Fox, Jr.,” said Fox, who directs the production. “This absurd comedy, with a hilarious take on melancholia, tells the community tale of a woman so drenched in sensual melancholy that everyone falls in love with her. One day she gets happy, wreaking havoc on her paramours.”
Melancholy Play features the costume design of new theatre faculty member Assistant Professor Mona Jahani, and the student design talent of Nora Francis of Mandeville, Erin Martin of Covington, and Creek Gay of Grand Lake, La.
Fox directs the ensemble of Southeastern students featuring Lauren Price of Hammond, Miguel Garcia of Harvey, Nico Arcuri of Springfield, Karley Parr of Mandeville, Mara Montecino of Loranger, and DeJuan James of Hammond. The student production team includes Alexandra Owens of Phenix City, Ala., Gabrielle Brown of Destrehan, Ashton Persick of Denham Springs, and Delani McCloskey of Metairie.
Tickets are free for Southeastern students and $15 for Southeastern faculty, non-southeastern students, military and seniors. General admission is $20. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance at southeastern.edu/boxoffice.
