Special Education

Southeastern's Special Education graduate program prepares leaders in the field with an emphasis on extended knowledge of theory and application of theory in schools, communities and family settings. Students develop the ability to provide professional services and leadership in schools, school districts and professional organizations. In the program, students receive intensive study in their selected areas of concentration. Students gain the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to have a positive impact on student achievement.

This program can be completed 100% online.

  • Accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation / National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council for Exceptional Children

  • Course objectives and learner outcomes aligned with the COMPASS/Louisiana Components of Effective Teaching and national professional organizations for advanced teacher preparation standards.

  • Lekotek, a toy lending library with child and family support, offers pedagogical experiences for students and opportunities for collaboration with schools and community groups

  • Snoezelen, a multi-sensory environment to support children and other individuals, provides opportunities for student involvement with multiple disciplines on campus, schools and community groups

  • Certified teachers in Louisiana may add additional certifications to their teaching certificate such as Early Childhood, English as a Second Language, Gifted Education, Mild/Moderate (Grades1-5), Mild/Moderate (Grades 4-8 and Grades 6-12) and Reading Specialist; students completing add-on certifications may be eligible for a post-baccalaureate certificate

  • The capstone action research project serves as a culminating experience inviting school and community participation

Program Requirements

  • Total semester hours required: 36
  • Complete all requirements stated in the catalog and the candidate's degree plan within a six-year period
  • Satisfactorily complete and present a capstone action research project.
  • Must have a valid teaching certificate (i.e. currently active or have had an active certification in the past).
  • Field experiences in diverse settings
  • Be recommended for the degree by the student's major professor
