LaitramStudents studying in one of Southeastern Louisiana University's engineering and industrial technology programs usually complete a successful senior project to demonstrate their knowledge, competence and readiness to enter the workforce.
Sebastian van Delden, head of the Department of Computer Science and Industrial Technology, said an initial partnership formed last year with the Harahan-based manufacturing company Laitram, Inc. resulted in the company contributing $5,000 in seed funds to be used in the research, design and construction of required engineering projects.
     The company, which operates a conveyor belt manufacturing facility in Hammond and three other facilities in Louisiana, was impressed with the students' work, explained van Delden. So much so, he said, Laitram will double its investment to $10,000 for the coming year.
     "We are very pleased so far with the results we are seeing from our partnership with Southeastern," said Franck LaBiche, Laitram's director of human resources. "The engagement, passion and follow-through we have seen from the Southeastern faculty has been amazing, and the level of students participating in the program has been great. I look forward to the coming year and building on the good foundation we have created."
     "We're happy that Laitram sees the immediate mutual benefits of this partnership," McCarthy said. "Laitram understands the importance of investing in education. The relationship is proving to be a win-win opportunity for both parties."

"With outside financial support such as this, our students have the means to stretch their imaginations in the development of working projects that help prepare them for growing employment opportunities in the technology sector."
     Besides financially supporting engineering technology projects, Laitram also provides paid internships for Southeastern students, some leading to employment opportunities with the company. Four students earned internships last year at various Laitram plants in Louisiana, and others are expected to participate this year. The internships frequently result in full-time hires.
      "In addition to the support of senior projects and internships, Laitram professionals participate in our industrial advisory board, work with us on collaborative research grant proposals, provide tours of their facilities for students, and donate equipment to the program," van Delden said. "Our relationship with Laitram is the most formal and holistic one we have."




Axiall has utilized many of Southeastern's interns in the past. These interns come to us prepared not only to learn but to contribute on valuable projects that help us to achieve our business and Health and Safety goals. We have subsequently hired former interns as full time employees.

At this time, we currently have four Southeastern graduates in our EHSS Department at our Plaquemine, LA site. We also have a recent Southeastern graduate at our Aberdeen, MS site.
     As Axiall grows, the demand for more qualified Health and Safety professionals will surely increase. Everyone is aware of all the expansions and new businesses that are coming to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast in the next few years. We will need professional Health and Safety Professionals to support the construction projects and then the plants once they are in operation.
     We are pleased with the quality of the graduates we are getting from Southeastern. They are ready to contribute right away. They possess the necessary knowledge and skills to strengthen our EHSS team.


EnvocEnvoc is a software development firm that writes software you can't buy "off the shelf." Envoc uses SOLID design principles in a Test-Driven Development (TDD) environment to create Mobile Apps, Portals, Integrations, Dashboards, and Software for Businesses that create a "Better Reality" for their clients. Envoc is adept at helping companies identify and pay down "Technical Debt" associated with legacy systems, quick-and-dirty design decisions of the past, and aging software systems. Envoc does not outsource or utilize overseas labor and is very active in Louisiana Universities and the technical community through numerous speaking engagements.
        Envoc also has a products division which has innovated some exciting products in the mobile space. AppMelt is a platform for creating iOS and Android mobile apps without the need for a programmer (www.appmelt.com). FlipFire is a two-way broadcast and subscription-based text-messaging platform (www.flipfiresms.com). BubbleVision is a cloud-based bubble-sheet grading package available for educational institutions.
        Envoc would like to thank the Southeastern Lousiana University Computer Science department and faculty for allowing Envoc to occasionally invade their classrooms, influence the curriculum, and challenge the students with real-world project assignments. Envoc has had the pleasure of interning and hiring almost a dozen Computer Science students and alumni. Constant learning is a requirement in our field and the Southeastern Graduates understand that, just like a doctor or lawyer, they are entering into a "practice" that requires continual training, refinement and innovation. Envoc is so impressed with the Southeastern Computer Science Department that it believes that many of the graduates will know more about Software Development when they graduate, than the people that will be interviewing them -- the curriculum is THAT good. 


The JBM GroupClearly, JBM Technologies has made a very good decision by moving our company within the environs of Southeastern. Though the school was not a primary factor in selecting Hammond, it certainly has become the primary reason for believing we made the right decision to relocate our company here from New Orleans. We now have three current Southeastern students working in our office blocks from the main campus at the Southeast Louisiana Business Center, whom we are extremely pleased to have working with us. We hired our first Southeastern Computer Science students about a year ago and our latest employee is the fifth Southeastern student we've taken on. 
The contributions made by Southeastern Computer Science students to our success have been significant. Not only do they possess formidable technical skills, but also have a sense of what it is like to produce in the business real-world environment. This aspect cannot be overstated. Obtaining talent from a college or university with the ability to "hit the ground running" came as a complete (and pleasant) surprise to us. Obviously, the Computer Science & Industrial Technology Department at Southeastern understands the importance of providing this awareness to its students that a skill-set must reach beyond the technical and into the inter-personal realm of the business world. We are convinced that our Southeastern student employees are much better because of this attribute than we would obtain from other schools. 
      JBM Technologies was started in 2005 by Barbara Ruppert and Michael Dimaggio and built primarily to serve the I.T. needs of the law enforcement community in South Louisiana. Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is the largest law enforcement agency in Louisiana and we are proud to be their primary I.T. software consultant. Other clients include agencies where access from Hammond is convenient. 
     Barbara and Michael, being both Southeastern graduates with personal ties to the Hammond and Northshore communities, believe we have made a permanent home for our company here in Hammond. Our close relationship to Southeastern is very important in this decision as the school has already proven to be an excellent source for resources as well as a knowledge base for industry trends and other information important to our success. Above all, the networking with the I.T. faculty and staff at the university provides us with an important sense of belonging to a community of like-minded professionals, so necessary for our growth.   All in all, Southeastern has been, and we hope continue to be, a very good friend.
