Research Services

We ask researchers to contact us prior to their anticipated arrival so we can determine
what collections are needed, assure that they will be available, and explain any restrictions
which may apply. -
For researchers who are unable to visit the Archives in person. There is a research
fee of $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour thereafter. There will
be additional fees for the copying and mailing of documents. -
Detailed information about the Archives’ collections are available either by visiting
the facility or contacting us and describing your research interests.
Rules and Regulations Regarding Research and Use of Materials

Collections do not circulate, and no materials may be removed from the premises.

Researchers are required to check personal belongings, such as purses, book bags,
briefcases, etc., into lockers. We are not responsible for lost or damaged items. -
Researchers must fill out an ARCHIVAL REQUEST FORM for collections to be examined
and present a Photo I.D. which will be kept until research items are returned. -
Center staff will get the books you need for research from the Open Stacks. Only one
book at a time may be used at the table. -
Pencils, typewriters, or portable computers may be used in taking notes. (No ink pens)

Manuscripts must not be written on, traced, or altered in any way.

The order of the collection used must be maintained. Please notify the staff if documents
are out of order or need immediate restoration due to fragile condition. -
If copies are desired, except manuscript items for which copies are not permitted,
a request may be made for such work. Only a limited amount of photographic copies
or photocopies is possible. -
All responsibility for infringement of literary rights or other legal questions which
may arise from the use of manuscripts is assumed by the user of the material. -
PERMISSION TO PUBLISH ANY MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL IN ITS ENTIRETY OR A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION
THEREOF SHOULD BE REQUESTED IN WRITING PRIOR TO PUBLICATION. -
Researchers are asked to acknowledge this Archives in any use they make of its materials
for publication and other writing. Proper citation should include the title of the
collection used and the title of the depository.FOR EXAMPLE: James H. Morrison Collection, Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies,
Southeastern Louisiana University Archives and Special Collections. -
The Archives must receive copies of publications, or article of any type, resulting
from the examination of its materials.
Regulations For Use and Reproduction of Material

The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies reserves the right to decide what materials
in its collection are available for use and reproduction and what form that reproduction
may take. -
The fees charged for photographic prints does not in any way constitute sale of the
picture, but is merely a fee charged for obtaining a copy print in lieu of using the
original file print or negative. The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies retains
all rights to the photographic materials on file in the Center for Southeast Louisiana
Studies. -
The provision of current U.S. Copyright Law or other legal questions apply; any and
all responsibility for questions of copyright and/or other legal questions which may
arise from facsimile reproduction of materials from the collections of the Center
for Southeast Louisiana Studies or from the use of such reproductions, in any manner,
will be assumed by the applicant. -
Photographs are procured for purposes of private study and/or scholarly research.
Reproduction, i.e., in a publication or for any other purpose or donation to another
institution without the written consent of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies
is prohibited. The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies normally reserves to itself
the sole right to copy or reproduce its photographs. -
Any material from the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies used in a publication
must be credited to the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies. If it is from a particular
collection in the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies, that collection must also
be credited. The staff will supply the appropriate wording for this credit line on
the back of each photograph. The person ordering a picture and requesting permission
for its use will be responsible for the credit line. All published photos must at
least include “Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies” on the same page as the photograph.Credit lines will have the following format:
Name of Item, from the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies, Name of Collection. -
All reproduction from materials in the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies will
be made on the premises by the staff. The original negatives may not leave the premises
without authorization from the director of the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies.
Such authorization must be requested in writing and state reasons why the reproduction
cannot be made by the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies staff. -
If photographs from the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies are used in a publication,
a copy of that publication should be sent to the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies
for its files. -
In order to protect the integrity of the collections, and the intellectual properties
of the university, no more than 24 images or 10% of the total collection, whichever
is greater, from any individual collection on Open Reserve may be reproduced. Patrons
seeking more than 24 images, or 10%, from an individual collection must submit a request
in writing to the director explaining the need for the images.Approval of such requests will be based on considerations such as the following:
Will fulfilling the request enhance the standing of the university or fill a cultural
resource need in the region?Are there any alternatives for securing copies of the images?
Are the images likely to be reproduced by the patron for sale or further distribution?
Will SLU be cited as the domicile of the originals in any public use or exhibition
of the images? -
Any photograph made by the Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies which is put on
display should be accompanied by a credit line displayed with the picture. The Center
for Southeast Louisiana Studies will be happy to work out a mutually agreeable arrangement
for doing this at the time photographs are ordered. -
Any person or organization not abiding by these regulations, including failure to
give proper credit, will be denied access to the use of materials in the Center for
Southeast Louisiana Studies
