Gulf South History & Humanities Conference

Including Special Theme Sessions on “Faith, Hope & Charity, in the Gulf South & the Caribbean World”

October 1-3, 2020, The Hotel Bentley, Alexandria, Louisiana

 

The Gulf South History and Humanities Conference is an annual event sponsored by the Gulf South Historical Association, a consortium of colleges and universities in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

The 38th Annual Conference, hosted by Tyler Junior College, in cooperation with LSU-Alexandria, welcomes researchers and scholars to propose papers for panels, roundtables, performances, and workshops, exploring any aspects of the history, ethnography, archaeology, and cultures of the Gulf South and Circum-Caribbean.

The full registration includes a complimentary Thursday evening reception sponsored by the GSHA, all conference sessions, and one-year membership in the Association.  A Saturday-only registration, and tickets for other social events, are priced separately.

Proposals for papers must be post marked by the August 15th, 2020, submission deadline.  To submit an individual paper, send a Word document attachment containing a title, 150 word abstract, and one-page vita.  To submit for any themed panels or roundtable forums, send a Word document attachment containing a title and brief (150 word) description of the theme, 150 word abstract for each paper, a one-page vita for each presenter and a suggested chair/discussant.  All submissions should be sent via email to the program chair, Dr. Jeffrey Owens, at jowe@tjc.edu. The conference is at the opulent Hotel Bentley in downtown Alexandria, LA.  Eccentric lumber magnate Joseph Bentley opened it to the public in 1908.  Its grand re-expression debuted in 2012 with 93 guest rooms, four session rooms, a ballroom, dining rooms, a stunning lobby, and private lounge.  In WWII, officers who headquartered here, to train troops for deployment, included Eisenhower, Patton, Omar Bradley, and young Henry Kissinger.  John Wayne and Roy Rogers were guests.        

 

The Bentley is conveniently located near I-49, adjacent to the Red River, 7 miles from Alexandria International Airport, which is served by Delta (Atlanta), United (Houston), & American (DFW).  For hotel reservations please contact Room Reservations at 318-442-2226 and specify “Gulf South” to receive the conference rate of $109/plus tax for king rooms; $119 doubles.
