Southeastern Louisiana University's Sustainability Center's Sustainability Day took place on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. It was a great opportunity for students to experience hands-on learning. It was evident that the students enjoyed themselves and gained new knowledge. Approximately 80 students, 3 teachers, and 8 parents attended sustainability day.

     

   The visit started outside with a tour of several aspects of the center such as, the ponds, community garden, and plant nursery, wind turbine, and biomass demonstration.
Next, the students viewed a PowerPoint presentation on alternative and
renewable energy concepts such as geothermal, solar thermal, solar photo-voltaic,
wind, and biomass energy. They also learned about the 
Sustainability Center's mission and initiatives.

     

During the tour, the students engaged in hands-on learning by dividing into smaller groups to become familiar with components of a photovoltaic (pv) solar panel system. The students successfully operated a table top fan using the solar panels. The students also assembled a complex wind power model and built a table top wind turbine.

     
     
     

 

After successful assembly, they were able to test their turbine against the forces of a high powered fan. They learned that the angle of the blades can affect the direction and speed of the turbine.

     

     

Tours were provided throughout the day during the following time intervals:

9:00 am - 10:30 am- Southeastern University Lab School

11:00 am - 12:30 pm- Independence High School

1:00 pm - 2:30 pm- Three home-school groups

We are so thrilled that Sustainability Day was a success, and we are looking forward to more schools taking advantage of the hands-on learning opportunity available for their students at Southeastern's Sustainability center regarding renewable energy awareness and environmental stewardship.
