Southeastern announces 2013 Homecoming Court and Beau Court

HAMMOND – Fourteen Southeastern Louisiana University students have been chosen as members of the 2013 Homecoming queen and beau courts. The seven women and seven men will reign over Homecoming festivities Oct. 21- 26.

Chosen as members of the queen court were seniors Anna Espey, Lake Charles; Ciara Reed, New Orleans; and Virginia Stevenson, Springfield; juniors Crystal Gonzalez, Hammond; Bonnie Lavigne, Slidell; and Laci Sherman, Baton Rouge; and sophomore Taylor Newsom, Ponchatoula.

Members of the beau court are seniors Devonte' Bryant, Amite; Jeremy Lloyd, Baton Rouge; Zac Maurer, Branden Summers, and Ryan Zellner, Slidell; and juniors Jonathan Duhon, Baton Rouge; and Miles Haydel, St. James.

The 2013 queen and beau, the top junior or senior vote-getters in the recent online campus election, will be announced at halftime of the Homecoming football game when the Lions take on Lamar on Homecoming Day, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

The court also will participate in Homecoming festivities such as Gumbo Ya Ya on Oct. 23, the bonfire and pep rally on Oct. 24, and the 3 p.m. Homecoming Day parade.

Espey, a health education and promotions major, is vice president of chapter development and song leader for Alpha Omicron Pi. She is the director of public relations of the Student Government Association, and a member Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society. She is on the President's List, a 2013 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges Award Recipient, and Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity's White Rose.

Gonzalez majors in kinesiology. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority, where she serves as corresponding secretary, and SGA, where she serves as alumnae relations chair. She is a member of the Order of Omega, the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success, and is on the President's List.

Lavigne, a communication major, is a member Phi Mu Fraternity, where she serves as social chair and risk management, and is a new member of Ducks Unlimited. She is a member of the Kappa Alpha Order Rose Court for 2013-14 and was a 2012 SGA Senator for the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Newsom, a nursing major, is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, where she has served as social chair and currently serves as Homecoming chair, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success. She is also on the President's List.

Reed, a communication major, is a member of Sigma Alpha Pi Leadership Organization, the NAACP, where she serves as chaplain, and the Gospel Choir. She is the recipient of the 2012-13 Women of Excellence Award, and is a Beacon of Light of Hammond Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship winner. She is also on the President's List.

Sherman is a kinesiology major and a member and Sweetheart of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she serves as vice president. She is also treasurer of the student United Way, a resident assistant in Louisiana Hall, a member of NAACP, and a mentor for Project PULL. She has been on the President's List for four consecutive semesters and is the recipient of the SGA Endowment Award in Nursing and Health Studies.

Stevenson is a finance major. She is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi, where she serves as chapter president. She has been a member of Up til' Dawn, helping to raise money for St. Jude's, and is a member of FMA. She is also on the President's List.

Bryant is a marketing major. He is a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, Lions for the Lamb, SMA, and Up til' Dawn. He has been on the President's List for multiple semesters and was a Green 'S' nominee.

Duhon is an exercise science major. He is member of the Kappa Alpha Order, where he has held numerous leadership positions, the Catholic Student Organization, and Ducks Unlimited. He is a previous DSA Leadership Ambassador and an Interfraternity Council delegate. He was named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll in the spring of 2013 and has been named to the President's List twice.

Haydel, a communication sciences and disorders major, is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and the 2013 Orientation Leader Team. He is also a member of NAACP and was named their Man of the Year in 2012. He has also been named to both the President's and Dean's Lists.

Lloyd is a vocal performance major. He is a member of NAACP, God's Chosen Gospel Choir, and the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha. He has been on both the President's and Dean's lists, received the Green "S" Award, and was the winner of Southeastern Star 2013. He is a 2013 Role Model of the Year recipient and received the Beacon of Light of Hammond Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship in 2011.

Maurer is majoring in communication and is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, where he received the Outstanding Scholar Award. He is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and is a resident assistant for University Housing. He is also the recipient of the Follett Higher Education Group Scholarship.

Summers is a marketing major and a past president of SGA. He is a member of the Southeastern Marketing Association, Up til' Dawn, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. He is on the Conduct Advisory Board and the Campus Dining and Auxiliary Services Board. He has been on the President's List for the past six semesters.

Zellner, a communication major, is a member and president of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He is also a member of the Order of Omega and SGA, where he serves as Senator at Large. He is the recipient of the 2013 Green 'S' Award.
