HAMMOND – A 22-year-old man was arrested by Southeastern Louisiana University police Tuesday (Sept. 10) evening after he attempted to steal a motorcycle from a student in a campus parking lot.

Damian Jackson of Independence was arrested and booked in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on charges of attempted carjacking, simple battery, resisting an officer and providing false identification. Jackson is not a student at Southeastern, and no weapon was used in the incident.

The assaulted student reported he had started his motorcycle and was about to leave the D Vickers parking lot at around 8 p.m. when the suspect hit him in the forehead with a closed fist. The student called for help as the suspect fled the scene on foot. A Southeastern police officer caught the fleeing suspect off campus near the Oak Alley Apartments on North Oak Street. The student suffered a minor injury when the suspect struck him.

University Police are reminding students and employees to remain aware of their surroundings and immediately report any suspicious or criminal activity to the Police Department at 985-549-2222, Southeastern's 24-hour emergency phone line.
