HAMMOND – An array of sculptures representing scientific devices and fantastical landscapes by award-winning artist John Pellitteri will be on display from Sept. 3 through Oct. 1 at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Contemporary Art Gallery.
The exhibit, “Sculpture by John Pellitteri,” will feature unique “objects to stimulate curiosity and possess the potential for discovery,” according to Pellitteri.
The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Gallery Director Dale Newkirk said the sculptures are “magical works of art that play with architectural space and human scale. The viewer is invited to visually explore his inventive creations.”
“The current debates over humanity’s impact on the environment, sustainability and the exploitation of natural resources is the inspiration for my artwork,” explained Pellitteri. “Combinations of traditional and modern materials are intended as a point of emphasis that the roots of many contemporary concerns have been present and managed throughout history.”
After pursuing his Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Louisiana State University in 2007, Pellitteri showcased his exhibitions in several states and Switzerland. He has been awarded the Artistic Excellence Award by “Space,” the International Sculpture Center Residency Award and numerous other recognitions. Pellitteri was recently awarded a Regional Artist Project Grant from the Arts and Science Council in Charlotte, N.C.  He currently resides in North Carolina.
