Student Requirements for Checking Out Rental Textbooks 

  • All fees must be paid
  • Must have a validated Student ID
  • Must be registered for the course for which the rental textbook is adopted
  • Extended hours of operation will be available prior to and during the registration period

 

Student Requirements for Checking Out Rental Textbooks (Online Learning and Off Campus Students)

  • All fees must be paid
  • Must have a validated Student ID
  • Must be registered for the course for which the rental textbook is adopted
  • Rental textbooks can be shipped if requested via email at textbooks@southeastern.edu

 

Student Requirements for Returning Rental Textbooks

  • Anyone can return your rental textbooks 
  • Extended hours of operation will be available during finals week
  • DO NOT leave rental textbooks outside.  Rental textbooks MUST be returned during Textbook Rental hours of operation.  Extended hours of operation and drop box will be made available each semester.

 

Email Notifications

  • Check your email regularly for messages from Textbook Rental
  • Email notifications are sent to your official email address when they are picked up or shipped as a confirmation of the textbooks that are rented to you
  • Email notifications are sent to your official email address throughout the semester providing textbook return information

 

Student Fees

  • $60 per course that require a rental fee 
  • All students who register at Southeastern will be charged a mandatory textbook rental fee per class (no maximum) if a rental book is required for the course in which they are registered. This fee is determined by the number of courses taken which requires a rental textbook. This fee will appear as a separate line item on the student's fee statement. 
  • The textbook rental fee is non-refundable except for students who drop courses during the add/drop period. Students who resign will receive a refund of the rental fee based on the current refund schedule.

 

Optional Purchase of Rental Textbooks

  • Students do have the option of purchasing rental textbooks; which can be done at any time from the time when the textbook is picked up for rental until the last day to check-in without a penalty or fine.
  • If a student is enrolled in the course, the student will pay the full retail price of the textbook they received.  A refund of the $60 rental fee is allowed if purchased within the first three (3) weeks of classes.
  • If a course requires two textbooks and only one textbook is purchased, half of the rental fee will not be refunded.
  • If a student is not currently enrolled in the course but wishes to purchase a textbook, they will pay current full retail price, based on the condition of the book.

 

Policies Regarding Marking in Textbooks

  • Light to moderate highlighting and underlining is acceptable
  • Excessive marking in new books and markings which appear to be intentional damage may be unacceptable
  • Determination of excessive marking is at the discretion of Textbook Rental

 

Damaged Textbooks

  • Mildew, wet, or torn books cannot be checked back in and must be purchased

 

Fines

  • For Fall and Spring semesters, fines will be assessed for textbooks returned on the 2nd business day through the 5th business day following the last day of final exams
  • For Fall and Spring semesters, any late book not returned by the 5th business day following the last day of final exams MUST BE PURCHASED at the cost of replacing the book with a new book.  Late fees will also be assessed for textbooks not returned by the posted deadline.

Textbook Rental Appeal Policy

  • Students with extenuating circumstances that prevented them from returning their rental textbooks by the deadline do have the opportunity to file an appeal.
  • The deadline to file an appeal is the 14th day of class following the semester the textbook was not returned.
  • The appeals process includes the completion and submission of the Textbook Rental Appeal Form as well as the submission of all pertinent information clearly documenting the circumstance(s) (ex. death certificate, medical records, military records, etc.)
  • Overdue accounts are due at the Controller's Office by the fee payment deadline.  If an appeal is approved by the Textbook Rental Appeals Committee the charges will be credited back to the student’s account
