Human Sciences

The mission of Southeastern’s Human Sciences program is to prepare students for professions which enhance and strengthen the well-being of individuals, families, and communities across the lifespan. Through dynamic coursework and a variety of field experiences, students develop the knowledge, skills, and professional characteristics to pursue careers or advance studies in Human Development and Family Studies, Child Life, or Nutrition Education and Promotion.

The five-year plan includes all Human Sciences courses planned to be offered each Fall and Spring semester from 2017-2022. This document also includes Human Sciences courses that will possibly be offered during the summer semesters.

Concentrations

The Bachelor of Science in Human Sciences offers 3 dynamic concentration areas that help fulfill our mission and strengthen employment opportunities for students based on their professional interests. The concentration areas include:

Child Life

Child Life prepares students to work with children and their families in the hospital setting. Certified Child Life Specialists are allied health professionals who typically work in pediatric hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation sites, hospices, and other health care settings. 

Human Development & Family Studies

The family studies concentration prepares students to enhance the lives of children and families through research, classroom instruction, and internship experiences. Careers of interest include:

  • Parenting Educator
  • Youth Program Director
  • Family Services Worker
  • Children’s Services

Nutrition Education & Promotion

Nutrition is a field encompassing careers in direct sales, food and nutrition research, communications, community nutrition, nutrition education, nutrition and fitness, the food industry, and food service. Careers of interest include:

  • Food Companies
  • Community Nutrition Education

Human Sciences Minor

The human Sciences (HMSC) minor supports student preparation for a career serving families and the community. Curriculum requirements for the minor in HUSC are 18 hours of HDFS/CL/NUTR/HUSC courses. 

Note: Only one of the following nutrition courses can count towards the minor in HMSC: FCS 224, NUTR 251, or NUTR 342
