Advanced Professional Degrees
The graduate program at Southeastern Louisiana University is designed to continue
ones professional preparation for musical careers or to prepare for doctoral studies.
Master of Music concentrations are offered in Music Performance, Music Theory, Instrumental Conducting, and Choral
Conducting.
Southeastern Louisiana University is located within an hour’s driving distance of
Baton Rouge and New Orleans, affording our graduate students the opportunity to access
the excellent research facilities and freelance in these metropolitan areas. Our musicians
have access to performance opportunities with professional ensembles throughout Louisiana,
Mississippi, and the entire Gulf Coast.
The Music Program’s Graduate Handbook describes in detail the requirements for all degrees. Our departmental requirements
conform to the broader policies and regulations of The Office of Graduate Studies.
Admission is determined by academic credentials and an audition.
Prospective students are urged to apply for admission as early as possible, but no
sooner than a year before the term you plan to enroll, and to utilize the on-line
application.
How to Apply:
Step 1: Apply to Southeastern Louisiana University
Apply for admission to the Southeastern Graduate Program. There is a fee for this application.
Step 2: Complete the audition
Applications must pass an audition before a faculty panel for each graduate degree
Southeastern offers. Please contact the relevant faculty member for your specific area of interest for audition requirements and to set up an audition.
A live audition is preferable but a virtual audition will be considered in certain
circumstances.
Graduate Percussion Audition Requirements
Deadline to apply is March 1.
Assistantships/Scholarships
The audition and application also serve as your application for music awards. Financial
aid packages and scholarships are available to graduate students on a competitive
basis. Graduate Assistantships range from $4,200 to $4,700 per semester plus tuition
and nonresident fee waivers. These assistantships also include full waiver of all
in-state and out-of-state tuition. Duties may include classroom teaching, applied
lessons, assisting in ensemble programs, and other departmental services.
International Students
International students from non-English speaking countries who do not hold a degree
from an American university must provide a TOEFL score. One cannot be admitted without
a TOEFL score. International students who hold degrees from English speaking American,
Canadian, or British universities are not required to provide a TOEFL score. Please see the office of International Students for more information.
